Canadian man 'confesses to his girlfriend's murder on Reddit'

Ager Hasan and Melinda Vasilije

A man purporting to be a murder suspect has confessed to killing his girlfriend on Reddit.

Police in Canada say they are "evaluating" the post by a user claiming to be Ontario man Ager Hasan who is wanted in connection with the stabbing of Melinda Vasilije last week.

The 24-year-old lead suspect is believed to have fled to the United States, where police are hunting him.

Police believe Mr Hasan is responsible for Ms Vasilije’s death.

The 22-year-old was found dead in an apartment she shared with a friend in Kitchener, Ontario at around 3am on 28 April, after police responded to an emergency call.

She died from multiple stab wounds inflicted in a “targeted” attack, police said.

The post on Reddit, titled 'Wanted for Kitchener murder my side', included photographs of the couple together and screenshots of what appeared to be their last text messages.

According to the post, Mr Hasan and Ms Vasilije had split after an argument a few weeks before she was killed. On the night she died, they made up after they “cuddled, kissed and talked about everything," the post claimed.

But as he was preparing to leave, the post claims Ms Vasilije asked Mr Hasan if he had been with other women during the break in their relationship.
When he admitted he had she flew into a rage, which culminated in her grabbing a knife.

The purported Mr Hasan said he then stabbed her multiple times in self-defence.

“The fact is no one is more destroyed than I am. She was more than a girlfriend, a soon to be fiance [sic], she was my everything. What happened that night was nothing but tragic,” read the post, which has since been removed and the user (Redasblue101) suspended.

According to police Mr Hasan fled to the US shortly after the murder, where he was last seen on 28 April at around 10am allegedly stealing a licence plate from a vehicle in a Walmart parking lot in Erie County, Pennsylvania and putting it on the black 2016 Honda HR-V he was driving with Ontario plate BPKT509.

In addition to second-degree murder, Mr Hasan is wanted on three counts of 'breach of recognisance', Waterloo Regional Police Inspector Mike Haffner told Global News.

The breaches of recognisance refer to a 'domestic-related incident' on 3 April, he said, when Mr Hasan was arrested for two counts of assault during a break-and-enter.

In the post on Reddit, the user appeared to refer to this incident, explaining how: “Melinda and I got into an argument via text and our relationship ended. I went to her apartment that day, to try and talk.
“Upon arrival I was confronted by Anna’s brother and her boyfriend. A physical altercation [took] place and the police were involved."

Anna is believed to be Ms Vasilije's flatmate.
As a result of the incident, Mr Hasan was restricted from Ms Vasilije's town of Kitchener and barred from contacting her, according to police.

The post said: “She started freaking out. Wouldn't say a word and just kept slapping me with tears in her eyes. Slaps turned into hits. I told her I was sorry but if she didn't stop I'd do something back. She didn't stop. I then stupidly pushed her, harder than I expected. She fell against the sink.
“Almost out no where she grabs a knife by the sink. Initially I thought was just going to hold it to try and tell me to leave. She doesn't. She comes at me in full force, aiming towards my face,” the Reddit post reads. “I tell her to stop. She doesn't, I tried grabbing the knife but ended up cutting my hands. After a few cuts I lost it. I freaked out, I was scared and in a state of shock. Never in a hundred years did I think she would use a knife against me. Out of shock and fear I grab one. I hit her with it, almost blindly. A few times. I didn't know what happened. I was confused, shocked and scared.”

The post claims that Mr Hasan intends to kill himself or turn himself in but just “wanted to get away for a few days before".
Waterloo Regional Police said in a statement they are aware of the Reddit post and it is currently “being evaluated by investigators.”

“That said, information like this is potential evidence and, as such, needs to be authenticated and verified,” spokeswoman Cherri Greeno told Global News.

“We don’t want to jeopardise that process and cannot comment any further on evidence. We would continue to encourage Mr Hasan to turn himself in to US authorities.”
