The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike has become a perennial problem. This strike problem by public university lecturers is older than majority of the undergraduate and post-graduate students except for a very few people.
And most time they always embark on indefinite strike. The problem dated back some decades with no permanent solution in sight. As usually, lot of counter and counter accusations are going between ASUU reps and federal government reps without any agreement as none of them is ready to shift ground about the negotiations.
It has become a national issue and embarrassment like electricity and other bedevilling problems holding the country back. Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, the current ASUU National President may have also experienced the strike as a student if he studied in Nigeria.
Apart from general strike by all public universities, some of these universities still have their internal and local issues that do resulted into strike often. Among the issues raised by ASUU are salaries and wages structuring and other conditions of service in the university system including funding, university autonomy and other pending matters.
From historical perspective, the federal government and governments at other levels have no interest in resolving issues that affect commoners because of superlative alternatives that are available to them and their families members in advanced countries. The interest of the country, parents and Nigerian students is of no important to them as all their children and spouses are all schooling in US, UK and other part of the world. The same thing can be said of their medical needs. In addition, these politicians have looted the country dry to sponsor their family members abroad.
The issue of private universities is another reason crippling public universities because some of the decision makers and policy molders for the country at every ministries and departments of governments are stakeholders and owners of these private institutions, so their lackadaisical attitude towards public institutions is very glaring. Their top priority is how to grow their business funded with public and looted monies at the expense of national interest. No more honesty and loyalty anywhere.
No more integrity any where among politicians and top governments workers in the country. Across the land we have greedy and selfish people and dishonest generations that are waiting for their time to steal and loot. Our orientation and psyche have been polluted.
A country where you have private universities owned by Obasanjo ( The Bell ) and Atiku (American University of Nigeria) funded with stolen and looted funds, you must not expect slow improvement in the country in all sectors talk less of rapid development. At this, their kids still go abroad for training. So, what is their own business with ASUU lingering crisis in public universities. None except to continuing to live large with their family at the expense of tax payers and poor students.
What happened to public primary and secondary schools in that country is gradually becoming the fate of public universities and other tertiary institutions. Majority of primary and secondary schools are no longer habitable and decent for learning with thousands of mushroom and unsuitable private ones scattered all over the country. Let me remind you too that all Buhari's children also schooled in UK therefore APC and PDP governments are not in any position to give lasting solution to this issue of incessant strike by public owned universities lecturers .
Nigerians, a situation where 90 percent of those in position of authority have their children in oversea schools, expect the worst service from them in all areas of social services and infrastructure. But the bigger problem is that the senseless students that are off schools due to strike because of insensitive of these bastard politicians and leaders will become their readily available tools of campaign for 2019 to make their own selfish interest.
Instead of students to mobilize and campaign for someone new that will address ASUU and public universities funding problem once and for all, but no they will still voluntarily with or without inducement queue behind Buhari or Atiku in 2019 because they are brainless and 'factory fitted' senseless people. Even some of the so-called ASUU members will still mobilize for Buhari and Atiku for selfish reason against national interest.
In fact some of these out of school students due to strike are already fighting on-line championing for Buhari and Atiku.
Majority of Nigerian students and tax payers still want to continue with the same group of people and hoping for a positive change in that country. That is not POSSIBLE.
These are TESTED AND FAILED group of people.
Silly youth !! Wake up !!
Nigeria is a country where many negate group agenda once they have opportunity to serve for personal agenda. Dr Iyorchia Ayu was a former ASUU president ( Unijos chapter ) before becoming a senator and a minister in some ministries including education ministry despite his efforts during ASUU days , I did not see where he openly championed ASUU agenda after becoming a Senator and later a minister.
The structures and facilities in some of these public universities about twenty years ago was an eye sore, you can imagine what will be presently on ground. Sorry ! Sorry !! I sorry for Nigeria !!
Greatest sensible Nigerian students and silly youths now is time to take your destiny in your hands and take a political position against year 2019 presidential elections outside APC and PDP. Both candidates from these parties are FAILURES going by their antecedents. Everything about your studies and probably some part of your future revolves around 2019 politics and beyond if you are attending public schools.
There are more than other fifty presidential candidates that you can scrutinize as group of students by picking one that will have a genuine interest and credible programme for education and providing the candidate a bloc votes from students' university community. Every successive governments have failed to accept 100 percent of ASUU demands and even reneged on all negotiated agreements.
A vote for Buhari and Atiku will lead the country into another four years of educational abysmal.
It is not necessary to become a politician but you can not separate politics or political decisions by Nigerian government from many of your daily activities.
