Jose Mourinho opted to pursue Romelu Lukaku over Alvaro Morata due to Real Madrid's being indecisive over whether to sell the Spaniard.
The Red Devils have been heavily linked with Morata for most of the summer with a deal believed to be close to completion. At the start of last month, Morata had agreed personal terms with Jose Mourinho's side, with the player's fee the only bump in the road.
But after negotiations had dragged on, Mourinho became frustrated with the prolonged dealing and instead chose to focus his attention on Lukaku.
In recent years, United's interest in Madrid players, in particular Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos, has ended with the pair signing new deals with the Spanish club. And so with the three times Champions League winners believing the same may situation may occur, they sought after the Belgian, who is eager to join up with former boss Mourinho.
United claim to have agreed a £75m deal to bring Lukaku to the club, in a deal that is only trumped by their club record signing of Paul Pogba last summer.
The pair, who both share the same agent, Mino Raiola, have been training together in Los Angeles to stay fit for the start of next season.
