Transfer news : Mourinho blocked United move for Ronaldo
Jose Mourinho blocked Ed Woodward and Manchester United from making a summer move for former United star Cristiano Ronaldo, the Daily Star reports.
Ronaldo joined Juventus from Real Madrid this summer after nine years in La Liga for a deal worth £88m.
The Portugeuse forward had been consistently linked with a return to Old Trafford in recent years but it is now reported that despite Ed Woodward’s insistence on bringing the 33-year-old back to United, Mourinho was against any such deal.
Mourinho reportedly preferred to strengthen his defensive options this summer rather than add another forward to his squad, though no new centre-back was signed.
Mourinho and Ronaldo famously fell out whilst at Real Madrid together with the manager stating that Ronaldo’s influence on the dressing room was a major part of him leaving the club.
Mourinho looked ahead to United’s Champions League fixture against Juventus in October which will see Ronaldo return to Old Trafford.
“Juventus were always a big candidate.”
“But they have transformed themselves into the biggest candidate because they don’t hide that the investment they have made has been made to win it.”
“I think Cristiano will like coming back as he was happy to come back when he was at Real Madrid.”
“But he comes back to do a job for them, like he did for Real Madrid.”
“He is still a top player – unless he fails to score this weekend and you tell me he is not a good player anymore.”
Ronaldo is yet to score for his new club in Serie A. - Read Sport
