UK — August 26, 2026: Residents in parts of Lincolnshire were left startled after an earthquake was recorded near Grimsby, with reports indicating that the tremor was felt locally.
According to the British Geological Survey (BGS), the earthquake occurred at 6:47pm UTC on August 25 and measured magnitude 2.2. The event was recorded at a depth of approximately 5 kilometres, with the epicentre in the Grimsby area.
The BGS classified the event as felt, although there have been no reports of significant damage or injuries linked to the tremor.
The latest incident comes amid a series of small earthquakes and seismic events recorded around the UK in recent weeks. BGS records also show minor activity in areas including Derbyshire, West Yorkshire, Northumberland and other parts of Britain.
Earlier in July, a stronger magnitude 2.5 earthquake near Spean Bridge in the Scottish Highlands was felt by residents in Spean Bridge, Roybridge, Inverlair and Fort William. Some residents reported being awakened by a deep rumbling sound and rattling inside their homes.
Scientists say small earthquakes are not unusual in Britain. Most are too weak to be noticed and cause little or no damage.
The BGS continues to monitor seismic activity across the country, noting that earthquake locations and magnitudes can be revised as additional seismic data are analysed.
For residents who felt the latest tremor, the brief shaking serves as another reminder that although Britain is not generally associated with major earthquakes, seismic activity does occur beneath the UK from time to time.
