Man Utd loanee Varela to miss DFB-Pokal final due to tattoo

Guillermo Varela finds himself in hot water with Eintracht Frankfurt and will miss the club’s DFB-Pokal final against Borussia Dortmund after having a tattoo applied Monday.

The 24-year-old, who is at the Bundesliga club on loan from Manchester United, went against the instruction of coach Niko Kovac and the club doctors as he was inked on his forearm earlier in the week, just five days ahead of the big match. The tattoo has since become inflamed, ruling him out of the fixture.

Professional footballers, as a rule, are generally only allowed to have tattoos in the off-season due to the healing process.

"This behaviour is grossly negligent and hurts the entire team," sporting director Fredi Bobic said. "The club cannot tolerate a player going against the instructions of the coach and the doctor before such an important game. Guillermo's path with Eintracht has ended with this action.

"We were previously thinking about extending his loan deal. That's no longer an issue. Guillermo is suspended with immediate effect and he will be given a very severe punishment. His egotistic behaviour unfortunately forces us to take these measures."

Valera had only featured for the Bundesliga club 10 times this season, but had spent the majority of the campaign sidelined due to injury.
