If you’re a Donegal native, you’ll be delighted to learn that it’s been declared the coolest place on planet Earth by National Geographic!
That’s right, the National Geographic Traveller magazine has placed the north-western county at the very top of its The Cool List: 17 for 2017, a big change from last year’s winner, Iran.
The Cool List marks the locations which the magazine recommends its readers to visit in the coming year, so the accolade is a huge honour for the county!
Editor of National Geographic Traveller Pat Riddell has weighed in on why he thinks Donegal topped the list saying, ‘We considered many destinations for our Cool List 2017, but we felt Donegal was in a real sweet spot – off-radar and hard to access, but on the cusp of a breakthrough.’
‘On the one hand, you have big pushes like the Wild Atlantic Way and the recent visit of Star Wars; on the other you only have to drive a few miles to have a beach or a road completely to yourself.’
Speaking to the character of the place he said: ‘It’s a warm-hearted place, but wilderness always feels just a stone’s throw away. And it is wilderness . . . world-class wilderness. We think it’s due a big year.’
This news comes after Donegal airport was voted one of the most scenic places to land in the world.
Congrats Donegal, we couldn’t agree more!
