Terry suffers first defeat as Villa captain

John Terry has been made the new captain of Aston Villa.

The former England and Chelsea captain takes over the captaincy from Wales international James Chester, as Steve Bruce attempts to guide the club back to the English Premier League.
In a brief statement, the club stated:

““Aston Villa are pleased to announce John Terry as captain. Terry will be skipper for the 2017/18 campaign.””

The 36-year old who joined Villa in the Championship because he could not face playing against Chelsea in the Premier League, wore the armband for the first time during Villa’s pre-season friendly against Shrewsbury Town on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was one that no one will remember in a hurry as Shrewsbury held the Championship side to a goalless draw at the break. The second half started off in the same fashion, and it wasn’t until the 68th minute, when Gardner’s strike struck the post, that Villa really threatened Shrewsbury’s goal.

The deadlock was broken in the 75th minute when Villa failed to defend a corner and Jules headed home. Things got worse for Villa in the 80th minute when Gnahoua slotted home. Villa were rewarded a late penalty, which Lansbury converted, but there was no time left to find an equalizer, giving Shrewsbury a relatively comfortable 2-1 victory. - Read Sport
