Chelsea defender David Luiz is encouraging the rest of his Blues team-mates to win the Europa League this season.
Speaking to the London Evening Standard, Luiz explains that Chelsea should be looking to ‘lift the trophy’ and earn themselves a return to the Champions League.
“It is important to win the trophy. Some talk about how winning it is a route back into the Champions League but, for me, it’s about lifting a trophy.”
“We will fight for all the titles. It doesn’t matter the name of the competition, we play for a big club. We will always be under pressure to win every game.”
The Blues kick off their European adventure on Thursday night against PAOK in Greece after missing out on a place in the top four under Antonio Conte last season.
However, Luiz is set to miss Thursday night’s opener, with Maurizio Sarri deciding to rest the Brazilian and rotate his squad.
Chelsea enjoyed a successful campaign in the Europa League under Rafa Benitez back in 2013.
Having been knocked out of the Champions League group stages just months after winning the competition, Chelsea dropped into the Europa League and went all the way, beating Benfica 2-1 in the final. - Read Sport
