5 reasons why eggs are so good for your health
Here, Push Doctor’s nutritionist Will Hawkins explains why eggs are so good for us.
1. Help lower your cholesterol
Eggs are a great source of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), which is more often referred to as ‘good’ cholesterol. Studies have shown that HDL can lower your risk of serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes.
Eating just two eggs a day could increase your HDL levels by 10%. However, any more than that wouldn’t be very good for you - despite their many good points, eggs are still high in fat.
2. Contain Choline
Choline is a vital nutrient that most people simply don’t get enough of. It helps your body in a number of ways, including brain development, liver and nervous system function, muscle function and building cell membranes.
3. Good for eyesight
It’s natural for your eyesight to deteriorate as you get older, but eggs can help you slow this process down. They contain several powerful antioxidants, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, that can maintain your long term eye health.
4. Can cut heart disease risk
When buying eggs, look for varieties that are enriched with omega-3 fatty acids. These will reduce the levels of triglycerides in your blood, which are known to increase your risk of heart disease.
Eating five omega-3 enriched eggs per week will help you cut triglycerides by as much as 18%.
5. High in protein
Our bodies need protein to repair and grow, but many of us aren’t getting enough. Eggs contain the right amount of all the amino acids our bodies require. This means we can get the best use of all the proteins provided. If your health goals include losing weight, building muscle, lowering your blood pressure and having strong, healthy bones, eggs will help you achieve this.
