Chelsea won the Premier League last season following their switch to a back three formation with wing-backs, and both Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso excelled in those roles, but the Blues do lack depth.
Additional wing-backs on either side of the pitch are areas where Antonio Conte does wish to address this summer and the Blues have been chasing Monaco star Benjamin Mendy.
The 22-year-old had a great season with Monaco following his move from Marseille and helped them win the Ligue 1 title last season.
Mendy, who has also been linked with Liverpool, is believed to have met with Conte, who was the driving force behind Chelsea’s late move for the Frenchman, regarding a move to Stamford Bridge but his efforts have gone unrewarded.
L’Equipe, via the Metro, report that Mendy has agreed a move to Manchester City after meeting with Pep Guardiola, but Monaco are demanding an exceptional fee for the fullback who is valued at €45m (£39.4m).
Chelsea are eager to add to their defensive ranks this summer with Roma centre-back Antonio Rudiger expected to join the club, but Conte would like to add another fullback as well
