S/West lawmakers inaugurate committee for regional integration



Members of House of Assemblies drawn from the six states in the South-West region on Friday converged in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital to inaugurate the Southwest Legislative Reform Implementation Committee, (SLRIC) to enhance regional integration.

The inauguration which took place at the Oyo State House of Assembly Complex, Secretariat, Ibadan, on Friday had representatives from Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo and Lagos States.

Speaking at the inaugural forum, the Speaker of Oyo State House Of Assembly and Deputy Chairman, Conference of Speakers, SouthWest Zone, Hon. Michael Adeyemo said that the programme was to brainstorm on the development of Legislative Reform Agenda for Southwest with a view to harnessing legislative practices in the Zone.
Adeyemo who enjoined the committee to build a solid foundation for legislature in the region to achieve future action plans that would transform the region, maintained that, “the committee would also follow the terms of references that would be agreed on at the end of the meeting to develop and validate Legislative Reform Solutions to serve as working document for it”.

In his remarks, Chairman Finance and Appropriation Committee, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Jeje Abiola said that another reason the committee was inaugurated was “to enhance unity and therefore speak in one voice and to compliment the effort of South West governors through their legislative backing.

Abiola said that the regional forum was formed irrespective of political affiliation saying, “I’m from PDP state and that doesn’t disturb me from participating in the forum because the motive of this forum is to enhance regional development and not for political party interest”.

Others who spoke at the one-day meeting include, Majority Leader, Ondo House of Assembly, Mr Joseph Araoyinbo, Majority Leader, Ogun Assembly, Mr Yinka Mafe, Majority Leader, Osun Assembly, Mr Timothy Owoeye, Majority Leader, Oyo, Mr Kehinde Subair and Deputy Majority Leader, Lagos State, Mr. Olumuyiwa Jimoh. - Daily Post
