Manchester United target Cristiano Ronaldo breaks silence amid transfer rumours

Cristiano Ronaldo failed to attend his man of the match press conference as speculation intensifies over a possible return to Manchester United.

Ronaldo started in European Championship winners Portugal's Confederations Cup opener against Mexico in Russia on Sunday and was chosen by Fifa as the outstanding performer in the 2-2 draw.
The rewarded player is obliged to attend a post-match press conference, just like Ander Herrera did after United's Europa League final win against Ajax, however Ronaldo skipped the sit down.

Instead, the 32-year-old spoke briefly with Fifa's YouTube channel but only about the entertaining stalemate.

"It was not the result we wanted," Ronaldo said.
"The team had the game almost won and we conceded a goal in the last minutes, but that is football.
"We are calm and thinking about the next game. There are no alarm bells ringing."
Ronaldo has largely maintained a vow of silence amid reports surrounding his future, with the exception of posts on his social media accounts.

Last week he uploaded a picture of himself
with his finger pressed to his lips, accompanied with the caption: "Sometimes the best answer is to be quiet."
It emerged last week Ronaldo, who left United for £80million in 2009, is intent on leaving Real Madrid after being accused of tax fraud.

Ronaldo vehemently denied allegations of defrauding the authorities of millions of Euros in tax and the Ballon d'Or holder was described as 'very sad and really upset'.
United attempted to re-sign Ronaldo in 2013 and two years later but a reunion failed to materialise and their former number seven went on to lead Madrid to Champions League successes in the following campaigns.

A return this summer could again appeal to United, whose plans to reinforce their attack changed drastically after Antoine Griezmann decided against leaving Atletico Madrid in the summer.

Ronaldo's teammate Alvaro Morata was identified as the alternative goalscorer to spearhead United's attack since Romelu Lukaku is determined to return to Chelsea and United baulked at Andrea Belotti's Torino release clause.

United manager Jose Mourinho, who shares the same agent as Ronaldo in Jorge Mendes, experienced a fraught relationship with his compatriot during their three years together in Madrid and a deal could largely depend on the state of their relationship.
