The Chairman of the Cross River State Consumer Protection Committee, Mr Mike Achu, has said that the committee has uncovered a foreign syndicate in Calabar that specialises in the repackaging of imported substandard Chinese cement.

According to Punch news, it was disclosed that the syndicate repackages the substandard product into UniCem and Dangote cement bags and sells to unsuspected buyers.

Achu said that the expired cement was brought into Calabar in large containers through the Calabar waterways and kept in a warehouse filled with UniCem and Dangote cement bags.
But the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, said those involved in the repackaging of the product were Nigerians and not foreigners.

However, it was alleged that the foreign syndicate was working with some Nigerian agents, including security personnel, to push the substandard products into the market.
